Pat Cummins Calls for Australia Day Rethink, Backing CA’s Decision to Drop Term in Marketing for Brisbane Test

Test captain Pat Cummins has joined the chorus of voices calling for a change to the date of Australia Day, supporting Cricket Australia’s (CA) decision not to use the term in marketing for the Brisbane Test against West Indies. CA’s long-held position on the matter has come under scrutiny this week, prompting Cummins to become the highest-profile sporting star in the nation advocating for a reshaping of Australia’s national day.

While emphasizing his love for Australia, Cummins suggested that finding a more appropriate day to celebrate is possible. He explained that understanding the historical significance of January 26, which marks the First Fleet’s arrival in Australia in 1788, led him to believe that an alternative date could be chosen to truly honor and celebrate the country’s history.

CA initially removed the term ‘Australia Day’ from marketing in 2021, an act that gained traction when several Big Bash League teams donned Indigenous strips for games played on January 26. Last year, a women’s international match was also rescheduled to that date, prompting Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner to voice her concerns on the issue.

Since the West Indies series coincides with the Australia Day public holiday falling on a Friday, the Gabba Test posed a challenge for officials. Cummins revealed that conversations with fellow players, including Gardner and Scott Boland, further reinforced the importance of reconsidering the date of Australia Day.

With cricket being a sport that boasts diversity and a wide range of supporters, Cummins believes the topic holds significance due to the varying perspectives of the community. He commended Cricket Australia for their consistency in approaching the matter and their effort to gauge the expectations and sentiments of players and the wider public.

The Test captain’s comments were made after attending the completion of a solar-energy project at Brisbane’s National Cricket Centre. Cummins, who has been vocal about the urgency of taking action on climate change, has never shied away from engaging in discussions on topics beyond cricket.

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley affirmed the organization’s neutral stance on January 26, emphasizing that they are not discouraging anyone from celebrating Australia Day. Hockley assured that CA has consulted with players and committee members, striving to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible.

While adhering to legal and ethical standards, it is crucial to highlight the diverse perspectives surrounding Australia Day and amplify the call for a reevaluation of its date. By fostering open and respectful conversations, the hope is to find a day that truly unites Australians in celebration of their rich history and diverse culture.
