Jordan Henderson’s Ajax debut could be delayed because of BREXIT
Jordan Henderson, the former Liverpool star, may have to wait to make his debut for Ajax due to a rule related to the UK’s departure from the European Union. Henderson recently joined the Dutch club on a two-and-a-half year deal after mutually terminating his contract with Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. However, as a result of BREXIT, Ajax will need to apply for and obtain a work permit for Henderson before he can play. While the approval is expected to be a formality, the process could take up to two weeks, potentially delaying his debut until early February.
It is possible that Henderson could still feature in Ajax’s game against Heracles on Saturday if the work permit application can be expedited. The 33-year-old midfielder arrives at Ajax during a positive period for the club. After a poor start to the season, which led to the removal of manager Maurice Steijn, Ajax have rebounded under interim boss John van t’ Schip. They have won six out of their last eight games and currently sit fifth in the Dutch top flight.
In addition to their domestic success, Ajax is also aiming for a continental trophy in the Europa Conference League. After finishing third in their Europa League group, the club will face Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the knockout round playoffs in February. Ajax has not won a continental trophy since 1995 and will be hoping to end their drought in European competitions.
The postponement of Henderson’s debut due to BREXIT serves as a reminder of the impact the UK’s departure from the European Union has had on football transfers and player eligibility. Players moving between the UK and EU now face additional administrative hurdles that can potentially disrupt their careers. However, with the proper paperwork and processes in place, Henderson is expected to join Ajax’s ranks in the coming weeks and contribute to the team’s pursuit of success both domestically and in Europe.
