New Delhi [India], January 19 – Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah announced a significant reduction in violent incidents in the Northeast region during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure. Speaking at the 71st Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council in Shillong, Shah stated that there was a 73 percent decrease in violent incidents, with numbers dropping from 11,121 between 2004 and 2014 to 3,114 from 2014 to 2023. Shah also highlighted a 71 percent decline in deaths among security forces and an 86 percent decrease in civilian deaths. The Minister attributed the decline in insurgency to the surrender of more than 8,900 militants in the past five years, emphasizing the connection between peace, prosperity, and development.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the government has signed nine agreements, resolving numerous long-standing issues related to law and order. Shah revealed that 75 percent of the areas previously covered under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) have been removed, except for parts of Assam and Manipur. He praised the last ten years as the most significant period for the Northeast’s development since independence, highlighting the reduced distance between the Northeast and the rest of India, both geographically and in terms of improved connectivity. Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to the Northeast, noting the establishment of a separate ministry for the region during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure and the implementation of the Act East Policy under Modi. The Union Home Minister stressed the government’s efforts to promote tourism, preserve local culture, and modernize the criminal justice system. The Northeast region has witnessed substantial developments under Modi’s leadership, marking a fresh and promising era of peace and stability.
