KUH-1 Surion Helicopter Secures Lease Contract to Meet Demand in Malaysian Market
The South Korean company Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is making a strategic move to penetrate the Malaysian helicopter market with its KUH-1 Surion helicopter. KAI has signed a lease contract worth RM187 million with Aerotree Defence & Services Sdn Bhd, a local company specializing in defense and aviation services. This deal marks an important milestone for both KAI and Aerotree, as they aim to meet the increasing demand for utility helicopters in Malaysia.
During the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) in 2023, KAI also sealed another significant agreement with the Malaysian Ministry of Defence. The contract, valued at about RM4 billion, entails the purchase of 18 FA-50 Block 20 light fighter aircraft. The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is set to receive the initial batch of these state-of-the-art aircraft by the end of 2026.

Faizal added that the KUH-1 Surion helicopter boasts the latest advancements in helicopter technology. It is equipped with a cutting-edge digital glass cockpit, an Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS), 3D digital maps, mission planning and analysis tools, and a Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS), among other state-of-the-art features. These innovations ensure optimal performance and safety during missions.
With a seating capacity for 13 passengers, including the pilot and co-pilot, the KUH-1 Surion utility helicopter is also fitted with an advanced Night Vision Goggle (NVG) system designed for nocturnal operations. The inclusion of such crucial features ensures the Surion helicopter meets the operational and training requirements of the Malaysian Armed Forces.
The KUH-1 Surion helicopter has gained significant popularity, with KAI having already produced 300 units for South Korea’s armed forces and public use across the nation. Powered by two engines, the Surion helicopter can reach a speed of 146 knots, boasting a Maximum Take-Off Gross Weight (MTOW) of 8.7 tonnes.
