Isro, the Indian Space Research Organisation, is set to conduct the first tests of the proposed Bharatiya Antariksha Station (Indian space station) next year, according to Isro’s chief S Somanath. The space agency is currently in talks with industry partners to manufacture, test, and launch the first module of the space station by 2028. The plans for the Bharatiya Antariksha Station were announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, with a target to launch the space station by 2035 and send an Indian astronaut to the Moon by 2040.
Somanath mentioned that discussions are underway to finalize the architectural design of the space station. He expressed mixed feelings about the various options being considered, implying the complexity of the decision-making process. The Isro chief affirmed that tests for the space station would commence next year, emphasizing the enthusiasm and drive within the agency since the Prime Minister’s announcement.
Somanath clarified that the initial stages of the space station would be unmanned, with human occupancy to follow subsequently. He highlighted the significance of the space station as a long-term asset that would operate effectively regardless of human presence.
Isro has also unveiled plans to launch a mission to Venus in 2028. Somanath mentioned that the mission was proposed earlier and efforts are being made to reduce costs. Isro is also working on developing a new rocket, the Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), to accommodate heavier payloads. The development of NGLV aligns with India’s focus on future Moon missions involving human exploration.
The Bharatiya Antariksha Station is expected to weigh around 20 tonnes and orbit approximately 400 km above Earth. It will include a crew command module, habitat module, propulsion module, and docking ports. Originally scheduled for completion by 2030, the project was delayed to 2035 due to technical issues related to the Gaganyaan crewed spaceflight mission and the Covid-19 pandemic. The first module is anticipated to launch in 2028 using an LVM3 launch vehicle, while the remaining modules will be launched by 2035 using the NGLV.
The Isro chief’s update on the progress of the Indian space station underscores the country’s commitment to advancing its space exploration capabilities.
