TOLEDO, Ohio — Living conditions at the Ashland Manor apartments in central Toledo have come under scrutiny once again. After initial complaints about roaches and trash accumulation, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department issued a 72-hour deadline to address the public health issues. While the problems were resolved within the given timeframe, concerns have resurfaced about the state of the complex just a week later.

Residents voiced their discontent, prompting Toledo City Council member Vanice Williams to call for a review by the city’s code compliance officials. Williams acknowledged receiving reports from residents claiming that certain problems that were previously fixed had resurfaced. Trash was once again piling up, and the elevator was not functioning properly. Although efforts were made to clean the trash and address the issue with the elevator, Williams emphasized the need for a sustainable solution to prevent a regression to the previous conditions.

Some residents, however, have observed improvements since the clean-up effort took place in the apartment complex last week. Frank Dailey, an 18-year resident, mentioned that the trash rooms, which were previously overflowing with garbage, became more manageable for tenants following the clean-up. Dailey, who used to work as a security guard at Ashland Manor, expressed hope for the reinstatement of security personnel to maintain order within the building.

Toledo Mayor, Wade Kapszukiewicz, has scheduled a meeting on Thursday with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington D.C. to discuss problem rental properties in the city, including Ashland Manor, which receives funding from the department. The aim of the discussion is to find viable solutions to address issues faced by tenants in problem properties. One potential solution suggested by resident Tyree Geeway is the provision of housing vouchers as an alternative to dealing with negligent landlords.

Council member Williams assured residents that she would continue to monitor the situation at Ashland Manor to uphold healthy and livable conditions for all tenants. She emphasized her commitment to consistently following up on the matter as she works towards ensuring the well-being of the community.

As concerns persist, it remains crucial to address the living conditions at Ashland Manor Apartments in central Toledo effectively. The experiences of the residents must be considered, and their voices should guide the efforts to create a safe and healthy environment for all.
