The Cleveland Browns are looking to strengthen their defensive line even further by adding a second defensive tackle. ESPN’s Field Yates recently predicted that the Browns may pursue five-time All-Pro Ndamukong Suh to join Dalvin Tomlinson, who signed a four-year contract worth $57 million.
Although Suh will turn 37 in January and has 13 seasons of NFL experience, he has been remarkably consistent throughout his career. The defensive tackle has been durable, having missed only two regular season contests due to injury. While his production has dipped in recent years, Suh remains an excellent run-stopper with an above-average grade as a run defender of 68.9. His overall player grade of 64.2 is respectable, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).
Cleveland has already made significant investments in its defensive line, with multiyear agreements in place to retain Tomlinson and edge rusher Myles Garrett for the next four seasons. The Browns also traded for edge rusher Za’Darius Smith this offseason and reworked his contract, paying him just north of $11.7 million in 2023 before allowing him to hit unrestricted free agency next March.
A one-year or two-year deal with a team option for 2024 seems appropriate for Suh at this stage of his career. Last season, he played only half of the season plus a playoff run with the Philadelphia Eagles on a $2 million deal. He played the previous two seasons on one-year deals with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for $8 million and $9 million, respectively.
While Jordan Elliott is expected to start in 2023, Suh could provide a clear upgrade for the rotating defensive tackle position. The Browns agreed to new terms with Elliott this month, ensuring he will remain on the roster throughout the season.
Despite investing heavily in defensive linemen, the Browns believe another contributor at the position could solidify their rotation. The addition of Ndamukong Suh could be the final piece of the puzzle to complete their revamped defensive front.
