Google Maps has announced a new feature that will revolutionize navigation in tunnels and other no-network zones. With the introduction of ‘Bluetooth beacons’ support for Android users, Google Maps will now provide accurate directions even in underground areas where GPS signals are not available.

While Bluetooth beacons are not a new concept, as they have been in use in big cities like New York City, Chicago, Paris, Brussels, and others, they were previously exclusive to the Waze app, which is owned by Google. However, the latest update brings this technology to the Google Maps platform, expanding its functionality and reach.

According to Google’s support page, the Waze Beacons program enhances location services, driving safety, and real-time visibility for cars navigating underground areas. This advancement is expected to greatly improve the navigation experience for Google Maps users, especially in urban environments where tunnels are common.

To access the feature, users can go to Settings, then Navigation Settings, and find the option near the bottom of the Driving Options section. It’s important to note that the feature is disabled by default, so users need to enable it manually.

While Android users can enjoy this new capability right away, iOS users will have to wait for their turn, as the report suggests that Google is currently working on bringing Bluetooth beacons support to the iOS version of Google Maps as well.

In other news, Google is streamlining its Google Assistant features to deliver the best user experience possible. The company recently announced that it will be removing 17 underutilized capabilities from Google Assistant. Users who frequently utilized these features will receive notifications from Google notifying them of the upcoming changes, which will take effect after a specified date.

Additionally, Google Chrome has clarified the definition of its private browsing feature. The updated description emphasizes that while this feature prevents others who use the same device from seeing a user’s browsing activity, it does not change how websites collect data or how the services they use, including Google, track users’ online behavior. The revision is aimed at better informing users about different types of tracking.

With these updates, Google continues to enhance its products and services, striving to provide its global user base with improved features and a more tailored experience. The introduction of Bluetooth beacons support in Google Maps is a significant step towards addressing the challenges of navigating tunnels and no-network zones, ensuring that users can rely on the app’s accurate directions even in challenging environments.
