Indian-Origin Couple Sentenced for Gym Locker Thefts and Luxury Splurging in London, UK

An Indian-origin man and his partner have received their sentences for a spree of gym locker thefts in order to fund their lavish lifestyle in south east London. Ashley Singh, 39, and Sophie Bruyea, 20, targeted gym-goers by breaking into lockers and stealing bank cards, which they then used to purchase expensive electronics and designer items. The stolen goods were subsequently sold, with the pair using the money to buy luxury bags, shoes, holidays, and even a pedigree puppy. The total value of their fraud between January 2022 and January 2023 amounts to £250,000. Singh has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, while Bruyea received a 20-month sentence at a young offenders’ institute, suspended for two years. In addition, she is obligated to complete a rehabilitation program and 120 hours of unpaid work. Both individuals were apprehended by the Metropolitan Police at Gatwick Airport upon their return from Paris, where they were found in possession of €2,000 worth of designer goods. A total of 18 victims were impacted by the couple’s crimes.
