Joni Simpson appointed new director for ILO Sri Lanka and Maldives

Joni Simpson has taken up her position as the Director for the International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, effective January 15. Appointed by the ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo, Simpson brings with her extensive experience in gender equality and inclusion within the workforce, spanning over 25 years.

Prior to her appointment in Sri Lanka, Simpson served as the ILO Senior Specialist on gender equality and non-discrimination in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. Her work involved spearheading initiatives to eliminate discrimination, violence, and harassment in workplaces, as well as improving care policies and services. Simpson also played a pivotal role in promoting the ILO’s business and disability network during her tenure. In addition, she served as the Interim Director (Officer-in-Charge) for the ILO Country Office in Kathmandu, Nepal, in early 2023. Previously, Simpson led the ILO’s global efforts on women’s entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education from the organization’s headquarters in Geneva.

Originally from Canada, Simpson holds a master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and a Bachelor of Education. The ILO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, actively works towards setting international labor standards, providing technical assistance, and engaging in policy dialogues to address critical issues related to employment, labor rights, and social protection.

Collaborating closely with governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and various stakeholders, the ILO strives to advance social justice and promote decent work opportunities worldwide.

With Joni Simpson assuming the role of Director for the ILO Country Office, Sri Lanka and the Maldives can look forward to her expertise in championing gender equality and fostering an inclusive work environment. Her extensive experience and progressive approach aim to bring positive change and advance the ILO’s mission on these islands.
