Health Officials Warn of Possible Measles Exposure at 2 Major Airports
Health authorities in the District of Columbia and Virginia have issued a warning regarding a potential measles exposure at two major Washington D.C.-area airports. The alert comes after a person with a confirmed case of the highly contagious virus traveled through these airports following international travel. DC Health stated that the risk of transmission is low but is notifying individuals who may have been exposed during their time at the airports.
The specific exposure periods identified were between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. local time on Wednesday, January 3, at the international arrivals area of Dulles International Airport, and between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, January 4, at Terminal A of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. DC Health urges anyone who was present during these times to be aware of their potential exposure.
Authorities are actively working to identify individuals who may have come into contact with the infected person, including reaching out to passengers on various flights. However, no specific information regarding the airlines or specific flights has been released, nor is it clear which country the infected individual traveled to.
Officials from both health departments are advising individuals who were potentially exposed to watch out for measles symptoms until around January 25. Those who have not received the measles vaccine are particularly at risk. Measles typically presents in two stages. The initial stage involves a fever exceeding 101 degrees Fahrenheit, accompanied by symptoms such as a runny nose, watery red eyes, and cough. These symptoms typically appear within 7 to 14 days after exposure.
The second stage of measles usually occurs two to three days after the initial symptoms. Some individuals may develop Koplik spots, which are tiny white spots inside the mouth. Roughly three to five days after the onset of symptoms, the infamous measles rash manifests on the face near the hairline, eventually spreading downward to the rest of the body. The rash is often accompanied by small raised bumps and high fever.
According to experts, a person infected with measles can potentially transmit the virus from four days before the rash appears until the rash has been present for approximately four days. This highly contagious virus poses a significant risk, and authorities are taking all necessary precautions to contain its spread.
These recent warnings follow another potential exposure incident at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Delaware on December 29. The Delaware Department of Health revealed that 20 to 30 individuals were potentially exposed to the virus when an infectious person visited the facility, despite not displaying any symptoms at the time.
