The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) swiftly came to the rescue of 182 stranded pilgrims who were aboard a ferry off Kakdwip in West Bengal, according to a statement released by the ICG. The incident occurred when the Merchant Vessel ‘Swasthya Sathi’ was ferrying approximately 400 pilgrims from the Ganga Sagar Mela at Sagar Island to Kakdwip and ran aground due to extremely poor visibility. The ICG received a message from the South 24 Parganas district magistrate in the early hours, prompting their rapid response. Two air cushion vehicles (Hovercrafts) were dispatched from Haldia and Sagar island to provide assistance and rescue the stranded pilgrims. The hovercrafts successfully evacuated 182 individuals and guided the remaining pilgrims and the boat to safety. The ICG had previously deployed sea-borne units at various strategic locations to ensure the safety of people during the annual mela. Additionally, a rapid lifesaving team of divers and a gemini boat are positioned at the mela site to handle any potential emergencies. An officer from ICG Ship Frazerganj is also stationed at Sagar Island to coordinate with the state administration and supervise seafront safety aspects. The Indian Coast Guard’s prompt and efficient rescue operation highlights their dedication to safeguarding lives and ensuring the well-being of the public.
