Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith has released the final report of the Independent Electoral Review, which contains over 140 recommendations on parliamentary electoral laws. The report follows an interim report released in June 2023, as well as two rounds of public engagement that generated more than 7,500 submissions. While the government will provide a formal response to the review in due course, some recommendations have already been ruled out, such as lowering the voting age to 16 and allowing all prisoners to vote and stand for Parliament. The report also suggested holding a referendum on the term of Parliament, which aligns with the National-ACT coalition agreement to introduce the Constitution (Enabling a 4-Year Term) Amendment Bill, subject to a binding referendum. The government will now consider the remaining recommendations. The Independent Electoral Review was established in May 2022 by former Minister of Justice Kris Faafoi. For more information, the final report, executive summary, and additional details can be found on the Independent Electoral Review website and the Ministry of Justice website.
