OpenAI Will Roll Out New Tools to Thwart Election Misinformation
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence startup, is taking proactive steps to prevent its products from being misused for spreading misinformation during the upcoming US and global elections. In a bid to combat the risks associated with AI-generated content, the company announced a range of initiatives on Monday.
One of the newly introduced tools will attribute information about current events provided by OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT. This feature will help users determine the reliability of information and provide an additional layer of transparency. OpenAI aims to safeguard the integrity of elections by ensuring its technology is not utilized in a manner that undermines the democratic process.
Additionally, OpenAI plans to encode images generated by its Dall-E 3 image-generator tool with provenance information. This information includes details about the origins of the content, such as the creator and creation date. By incorporating the cryptographic standard established by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), OpenAI intends to enable voters to discern whether an image they come across was created using AI technology. The C2PA was co-founded by Adobe, Microsoft, Intel, and several other companies in 2021.
To further assist users, OpenAI will soon release an image-detection tool to determine if an image was generated by Dall-E. Initially, this tool will be made available to journalists, platforms, and researchers to gather feedback. The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, revealed that the tool demonstrated 99% accuracy during internal testing, a promising achievement in countering AI-generated content.
In the case of ChatGPT, OpenAI aims to enhance its capabilities by enabling users to access real-time information about current events. The chatbot will now provide attribution and links to articles, ensuring users have access to reliable sources. OpenAI stated that they are actively integrating with existing sources of information to augment the reliability and utility of ChatGPT.
OpenAI has been engaged in discussions with numerous media companies to secure content licensing deals, including major outlets like CNN, Fox Corp., and Time. The startup has already reached agreements with Axel Springer SE and the Associated Press, paving the way for wider access to trustworthy information.
By focusing on transparency and attribution, OpenAI hopes to empower voters to make informed decisions by distinguishing authentic content from potential misinformation. With the upcoming elections looming large, the need to counter election-related misinformation has never been more crucial.
