A handful of people gathered outside provincial court in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on Monday to show support for the family of Tyson MacDonald, a 17-year-old whose body was discovered last month in eastern P.E.I. Inside the packed courtroom, the victim’s relatives and friends attended a hearing for one of the two young individuals accused of killing MacDonald. The hearing was held to determine whether the accused would remain in jail during proceedings. One of the accused teenager’s family members sat on the other side of the court. MacDonald went missing on December 14 and his body was found five days later after an extensive search by the police. Both accused have been charged with first-degree murder and hiding human remains, with one of them facing additional charges including accessory after the fact, public mischief, and obstruction of a peace officer. Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, there is a publication ban preventing the naming of the accused or sharing further details of Monday’s hearing. The Crown prosecutor has indicated that if the two teens are found guilty, his office would consider seeking adult sentences instead of youth court proceedings. Another accused teen is scheduled to appear in court in Georgetown on Thursday. The tragedy has deeply affected the community, with people expressing their heartfelt sadness and calling for justice. The case has had a significant impact on the local school where MacDonald was a Grade 12 student, leaving many students feeling unsettled upon their return. The supporters outside the courthouse hope that justice will be served, bringing some peace to the community.
