Zambia Registers 12 New Cholera Deaths, 418 More Cases

Zambia has reported a surge in cholera cases and deaths as the country battles against the ongoing outbreak. Within the last 24 hours, 12 new cholera-related deaths and 418 fresh cases were recorded, according to Health Minister Sylvia Masebo. The country has also received its first batch of 1.4 million oral cholera vaccine doses out of the 1.7 million already approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Since October last year, the cholera outbreak has affected 45 out of Zambia’s 116 districts. Lusaka, the country’s capital, remains the most heavily impacted, accounting for 381 out of the 418 new cases. To combat the spread of the disease, Zambia has employed the use of oral cholera vaccines, which have proven successful in responding to emergencies in different parts of the country.

As a preventive measure, we periodically use oral cholera vaccines to successfully respond to emergencies that have affected different parts of the country, Minister Masebo stated.

The situation remains a concern as Zambia reports a steady increase in cases. The health ministry disclosed that over the past 24 hours, 363 patients have been discharged from various treatment centers, slightly lower than the numbers from the previous days. Efforts are being made to ensure the prompt treatment and recovery of patients.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The disease spreads rapidly in areas with inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water. It can lead to severe dehydration and can be fatal if not treated promptly.

The Zambian government is implementing various measures and working closely with international health organizations to contain the outbreak. Water treatment and purification, improved sanitation, and public education campaigns are being emphasized to prevent further transmission of the disease.

It is crucial for individuals to practice proper hygiene, such as handwashing with soap and clean water, to minimize the risk of cholera. Additionally, communities are advised to ensure a safe water supply and practice proper waste disposal.

The World Health Organization has provided technical and financial support to Zambia, assisting in the procurement of oral cholera vaccines to combat the outbreak. Vaccination campaigns targeting high-risk areas are being conducted to protect vulnerable populations.

While the situation remains challenging, the Zambian government and health authorities are committed to containing the spread of cholera and ensuring the well-being of its citizens. Vigilance, community involvement, and collaborative efforts are vital in overcoming this outbreak and preventing future occurrences.

As the country continues to receive support and administer vaccines, it is hoped that the number of new cases and deaths will decrease, bringing relief to affected communities.
