Overall crime in the city of Green Bay experienced a significant decrease of almost 13% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to the 2023 Crime Report released by the Green Bay Police Department (GBPD). This reduction marks the lowest number of offenses recorded in the past five years. Crimes against persons fell by approximately 19%, with just under 1,400 reported cases last year. However, there was no change in the number of homicides from 2022. Chief Chris Davis of the GBPD expressed satisfaction with the results, attributing the decline in crime to the community’s commitment to public safety and the diligent efforts of the police force.
In 2022, Green Bay witnessed a surge in crime, with 7,056 reported cases, the highest since 2019. However, in 2023, the numbers decreased to 6,142. Crimes against property saw a decrease of around 10.5%, with approximately 3,050 recorded cases in 2023. The city saw a substantial reduction in shoplifting cases, down by 30%, and theft/larceny cases, down by 23%.
While motor vehicle thefts experienced an increase from 180 in 2022 to 285 in 2023, there was a considerable 62% reduction in part thefts, such as catalytic converters and license plates, with only 65 cases reported. Crimes against society also decreased by approximately 12% in 2023, with 1,688 cases reported.
Further analysis of the data revealed a decline in offenses related to assault, including gun violence, by 17% in 2023. GBPD reported 28 fewer cases of shots being fired compared to 2022, amounting to a 48% decrease over the past three years. Additionally, there was a 24% decrease in weapons-related cases, including concealed carry violations and possession of firearms by felons.
Drug offenses showed a decrease of 9%, with approximately 1,500 cases recorded in 2023. However, concerning the issue of overdoses, there was a 39% increase compared to the previous year. In 2023, there were 172 reported overdoses, 32 of which proved fatal, while 2022 saw 124 overdoses, with 31 resulting in fatalities.
The Green Bay community has shown tremendous support and investment in enhancing public safety, leading to a substantial drop in overall crime rates.
