Spain’s energy company Repsol is set to commence a 52-day maintenance program at its Tarragona chemicals complex on January 15. The planned shutdown will include Repsol’s POSM unit, as well as its propylene glycol and polyether polyols production lines. The Tarragona complex supplies propylene oxide (PO) to Repsol’s Puertollano site, which may also experience output disruptions during the maintenance period. The turnaround will involve €50mn ($54.8mn) in maintenance work and a €100mn investment in safety and efficiency improvements. This investment aims to enhance competitiveness, improve energy efficiency, and reduce CO2 emissions. Through these measures, Repsol anticipates a potential reduction of up to 104,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. In light of the challenges faced in the fourth quarter of 2023, Repsol may have encountered difficulties in building stocks ahead of the shutdown. Despite the potential limitations on propylene glycol and polyols supply from Tarragona in December, the maintenance program is expected to enhance overall operational performance and sustainability.
