A former prisoner from Bournemouth is embarking on a charity adventure, cycling from Portsmouth to Paris on a Beryl bike. David Haze, who turned his life around through sport, will cover a distance of 155 miles (249km) to raise funds for Dorset Mind, a mental health support charity. Starting his journey on Monday morning, Mr. Haze will take a ferry to Caen, France, where he will ride overnight. The 38-year-old ex-prisoner holds eight world records in paddleboarding and has been mentoring young individuals, encouraging them to steer away from a life of crime.
Mr. Haze believes in the transformative power of adventure and being outdoors. He stated, The power of adventure and the power of being outdoors can really change people’s mindsets and their positivity, their outlook towards life. After setting the world record for the fastest time spent solo paddleboarding across the River Thames in 2021, he decided to tackle a new challenge on solid ground, choosing the unconventional Beryl bike.
Acknowledging that Beryl bikes are typically heavier than standard bikes, Mr. Haze aims to make the journey even more interesting. He stated, These bikes aren’t designed to travel to France – they’re usually used to plodding around your local towns and cities.
