Opposition accuses PM of mismanagement

The Opposition has accused the Prime Minister of losing control in managing the affairs of the country since he took office in 2019. Opposition Leader, Joseph Lelang, made these remarks amid calls and resignations of political leaders from his government en masse. Civil society groups have also called on the Prime Minister to resign following recent riots, looting, rape, and killings.

Lelang criticized the Prime Minister for being in panic mode and micro-managing the country. He highlighted that the Prime Minister has taken over responsibilities typically handled by Ministers and Governors. This includes making statements on behalf of the Treasurer, presenting education cheques, and receiving State of Emergency (SoE) dividend cheques.

This is not a one-man show, stated Lelang. He added that a Prime Minister with rational thinking would respect himself and resign, especially considering the recent carnage, loss of lives, and extensive damage experienced during last week’s riots.

Our business houses and people are hurting and suffering under your leadership, he continued. Lelang pointed out that the government’s policies have failed, leading to issues such as an uncontrollable national debt, skyrocketing inflation, foreign exchange shortages, rising unemployment, and rampant crime with no foreseeable solution in sight.

According to Lelang, it is crucial for the government to acknowledge its failures and their impact on the nation and its people. He emphasized the need for new leadership to take charge and rectify the situation, restoring confidence and credibility to the impoverished nation. Lelang concluded by highlighting the loss of respect, confidence, and trust the Prime Minister has incurred from both the people and political leaders in Papua New Guinea.

The accusations made by the Opposition reflect growing concerns over the Prime Minister’s handling of the country’s affairs. As calls for his resignation continue to mount, the government faces immense pressure to address the prevailing issues of unrest, violence, economic challenges, and social turmoil.

These allegations raise questions about the Prime Minister’s ability to lead effectively and prioritize the interests and needs of the nation and its citizens. As the situation unfolds, both the government and the Opposition will need to confront these pressing issues to pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future for Papua New Guinea.

In the midst of these developments, it is essential to maintain adherence to legal and ethical standards. This includes avoiding libel, defamation, and invasion of privacy. By providing factual information and unbiased reporting, journalists play a crucial role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse.

As this story continues to evolve, further updates on the government’s response and potential consequences for the Prime Minister remain critical. The future of Papua New Guinea hangs in the balance as leaders and citizens alike grapple with the consequences of mismanagement and the urgent need for effective governance and leadership to restore peace, stability, and progress.
