Data from a nationwide diabetes screening program in the UAE has revealed that over 1,000 people were diagnosed with either diabetes or pre-diabetes within 100 days. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHP) partnered with the private sector to conduct the screenings, which involved analyzing glycated hemoglobin levels to determine blood sugar levels. Now, artificial intelligence will utilize the data to predict the potential consequences of the disease. It will also administer early preventive treatment to individuals with pre-diabetes, reducing their reliance on long-term medication. Nearly 9% of the 12,877 people screened were found to have pre-diabetes. Merck, the pharmaceutical company that managed the screening program, expects this number to decrease after six-month medical follow-ups. Pre-diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough for a full Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Engaging in healthy lifestyle changes can help avoid the development of Type 2 diabetes. The campaign aimed to provide comprehensive services across all parts of the country, using digital questionnaires to offer support and information on diabetes management. Screening was conducted for those with a high risk based on factors such as family history, body mass index, weight, and lifestyle. Medical consultations and remote counseling were provided, linking the examination to the appropriate course of treatment. The Ministry of Health aims to enhance preventive care and reduce lifestyle-related diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. A dedicated hotline has been set up to support the screening program and answer any public queries. The success of this 100-day campaign reflects previous population totals, with nearly 12.3% of the adult population in the UAE already diagnosed with diabetes. Moving forward, the Ministry of Health plans to expand the program and utilize artificial intelligence to identify high-risk patients and support lifestyle changes. Meanwhile, a campaign at Ras Al Khaimah Hospital is encouraging weight loss as a means of reducing the risk of diabetes. Participants stand a chance to win cash prizes for losing the most weight. Additionally, the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre has partnered with Kyoto University and Rege Nephro to research innovative diabetes treatments using cell therapy. This therapy could provide new options for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The collaboration aims to pave the way for transformative healthcare solutions. With the rising rates of diabetes in the UAE, these initiatives are crucial in raising awareness, bridging the gap between diagnosis and treatment, and preventing chronic diseases in the population.
