More than 20 swimmers were rescued in a mass rescue operation at Sydney’s Maroubra Beach after being caught in a sudden rip current. The incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon while races in the Ironmen and Ironwomen series were taking place. Competitors noticed a group of swimmers struggling in the water approximately 100 meters offshore. Athletes, including Ironwoman champion Lana Rogers, acted swiftly to provide assistance. Video footage captured the dramatic scene as multiple surfboard-mounted athletes reached out to rescue the stranded swimmers. The group consisted of tourists and children, according to competition organizers. The rescuers, which comprised surf life savers and coaches, safely transported the swimmers back to the shore using inflatable rescue boats. Fortunately, there were no major injuries reported, and all swimmers were treated by local surf lifesavers. Lana Rogers emphasized the importance of recognizing how quickly conditions can change at Maroubra Beach and urged beachgoers to be cautious. Meanwhile, in New South Wales’ Northern Rivers region, authorities continue their search for a teenage boy who went missing after jumping into a watering hole at Green Pool in Angourie. The 16-year-old failed to resurface, prompting a police dive team to be dispatched to the scene. On Saturday evening, four individuals were hospitalized after getting caught in a rip current at Bronte Beach. Thankfully, all four were in stable condition. The incident occurred just as lifesavers were concluding their shift. Surf Life Saving Australia’s sport manager, Wayne Druery, reminded the public that if surf lifesavers cannot see them, they cannot save them. The recent series of incidents highlights the importance of exercising caution and being aware of the ever-changing conditions at Australia’s beaches.
