Truth Decay Threatens US Power & Global Stability; Urgent Measures Required

The diminishing regard for factual analysis in contemporary American public discourse, known as truth decay, is having serious consequences for both the United States and global stability. This erosion of truth is primarily driven by extreme partisan polarization and the unchecked spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories. These factors create a vicious cycle, where misinformation fuels polarization, and polarization blinds people to the facts, leading to a divorce between public debate and reality. The consequences of this phenomenon are far-reaching, impacting sound policymaking, social cohesion, and the effectiveness of democracy itself.

Traditionally, factual analysis provided non-partisan ballast in foreign policy and intelligence circles, with bipartisan consensus emerging stronger. However, partisan rancor has poisoned this sphere as well. Assessments of threats and policy debates are no longer tethered to impartiality and have drifted toward the fringe. This politicization hampers the intelligence community’s ability to provide neutral counsel to leaders, eroding the integrity of their work.

Internationally, truth decay also undermines the United States’ credibility among its allies. Partisan misinformation tarnishes America’s reputation and weakens its standing on the global stage.

Addressing truth decay is not a simple task and cannot be achieved through a single solution. Although more facts are necessary, they alone cannot overcome deeply entrenched biases. It requires concerted efforts across sectors to distinguish facts from myths and restore respect for evidence. Promoting media literacy and accountability are crucial steps toward combating truth decay.

Above all, American society must rediscover the central importance of truth to maintain a functional democracy, even when inconvenient. Without persistent efforts, partisanship may permanently erode the concept of truth.

From a Chinese perspective, it is hoped that truth will once again take a firm foothold in American public life. The reliability of a major global power like the United States has far-reaching implications for global stability. While our political systems may differ, all states rely on factual assessments to serve their people’s interests. Neither society benefits from excessive polarization. Just as China emphasizes pragmatic realism in our governance, we hope for a more rational and responsible America that fulfills its global responsibilities.

As a concerned voice from Malaysia, it is crucial to consider the ramifications of data protection laws. The recent plan to establish a Central Database in Malaysia, which consolidates information from different ministries and government agencies, raises significant concerns regarding privacy. Additionally, members of the public have no legal recourse if their personal data is leaked or stolen.

The Personal Data Protection Act 2010 in Malaysia exempts the federal and state governments from its application, despite these government bodies being the biggest users of data in the country. To address this issue, Malaysia should extend the legislation to include personal data processed by the government. Similar to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) adopted in 2016, the Personal Data Protection Act should encompass personal data managed by both federal and state governments.

In particular, three articles from the GDPR can serve as a reference. Article 3 states that the regulation applies to the processing of personal data in the context of the activities of an establishment of a controller or a processor in the EU. Article 4 defines controller and processor to include public authority. Lastly, Article 9 prohibits the processing of personal data that reveals sensitive information unless there are appropriate safeguards provided by the law.

By adapting these principles and extending the Personal Data Protection Act, Malaysia can better safeguard the privacy of its citizens and ensure legal protection if data breaches occur. It is essential to prioritize data protection and provide a framework that aligns with international standards.

Overall, addressing truth decay and strengthening data protection laws are critical steps in preserving global stability and ensuring the well-being of citizens in both the United States and Malaysia. The pursuit of truth, evidence-based policymaking, and respect for privacy must be at the forefront of our efforts to build a more informed and secure world.
