Calls for expansion of grants for older people to include mobility scooters

A motion urging the expansion of grants to include mobility scooters and other mobility equipment within the existing Grants for Older People and People with a Disability program was discussed at this month’s meeting of Cork City Council.

Currently, Cork City Council provides grants for essential home modifications such as walk-in showers, stair lifts, and handrails. However, Independent councillor Ken O’Flynn emphasized the need to extend these grants to encompass mobility scooters and walker aids.

According to O’Flynn, mobility scooters have become an essential mode of transportation for individuals with mobility challenges, allowing them to maintain their independence and fully participate in community life. He highlighted the positive impact that the current grants have had on his constituents but noted that some residents still face financial constraints that prevent them from acquiring mobility scooters.

Including mobility scooters in the grant program would directly assist individuals in obtaining these devices, O’Flynn said. This support would alleviate the financial burden associated with purchasing a mobility scooter, making it more accessible to those who require it. It sends a clear message of inclusivity and support to our older residents and fellow citizens with disabilities.

In response to the motion, Director of Services Niall Ó Donnabháin stated that the current regulations governing the Grants for Older People and People with a Disability program do not include funding for mobility scooters. The scheme focuses on grants for necessary improvement works or adaptations to houses.

However, O’Flynn’s motion has sparked a discussion about the importance of addressing the transportation needs of older people and individuals with disabilities. It highlights the crucial role that mobility scooters play in enhancing their quality of life and emphasizes the need for financial support to make these devices more accessible.

By expanding the grants to include mobility scooters and walker aids, Cork City Council would be empowering all members of the community to live their lives to the fullest and participate in society without limitations.

The motion will now be further considered by the council, with hopes that the Grants for Older People and People with a Disability program can be expanded to better meet the needs of individuals in need of mobility assistance.
