BIRMINGHAM — A winter storm watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham for north Alabama, with the potential for snow and icy road conditions that could cause travel disruptions. The watch will primarily be in effect from Monday night through Tuesday.
According to the NWS, the northernmost counties in Alabama should expect to see between 1-4 inches of snow, while freezing rain could extend further south into the Tribune coverage area. The wintry mix is anticipated to occur between Monday morning and Tuesday morning across the northwest half of Central Alabama, which could result in slippery road conditions.
Given the forecasted temperatures, which are expected to remain below freezing on Tuesday, and the already freezing ground surfaces, any precipitation that falls is likely to create travel difficulties that may persist into Wednesday.
The timing of the precipitation and freezing temperatures is crucial in determining the impact of winter weather in the southern region. While colder temperatures are anticipated, the amount of moisture is still uncertain.
Meteorologist James Spann from Birmingham stated that a winter weather watch may be necessary as far south as Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. However, the lack of moisture might allow the I-20 corridor to avoid travel problems altogether.
Speaking about the areas under the winter storm watch, Spann highlighted, the best chance of accumulating snow is along and north of a line from Winfield to Decatur to Scottsboro, where the winter storm watch has been issued. Snow amounts here will likely be in the 1-4 inch range. Travel impact is likely.
NWS maps indicate a possibility of a light dusting of snow extending as far south as Shelby County.
Spann further warned, Some light freezing rain or light freezing drizzle is possible over the northern half of Alabama Tuesday morning. This can lead to ice accumulating on exposed objects. Even though precipitation is expected to be very light, this could lead to some icy spots (mainly on bridges) as far south as I-20 Tuesday morning.
As the winter storm watch is announced, it is crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and to exercise caution while traveling. Ensuring the safety of individuals across Alabama is of utmost importance during this winter weather event.
The NWS and local authorities will continue monitoring the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. It is advised that residents stay tuned to weather updates and take appropriate measures to prepare for potential travel problems due to snow and ice.
Remember to stay safe and take necessary precautions during this winter storm watch.
