CHAMPAIGN — After the recent announcement that Illinois football would not be retaining linebacker coach Andy Buh, speculation is swirling about potential replacements. But one name stands out among the rest: John Holecek.

Bringing Holecek on board as a linebacker coach would not only resonate with the Illinois fan base, but it would also please high school coaches throughout the state. Holecek’s impressive 17-year career as a linebacker coach included knocking out several teams from the state playoffs, further solidifying his expertise and reputation.

Not only does Holecek have a strong connection to the program’s past as part of one of the best linebacker groups in Illinois history, but he also brings a wealth of experience as the former head football coach at Loyola Academy. Under his leadership, the Ramblers won three Class 8A state titles, amassing an impressive record of 185-36.

During his tenure at Loyola, Holecek had the opportunity to work with numerous college prospects, giving him access to some of the top minds in the sport. Two of his former players, James Kreutz and Josh Kreutz, are currently key contributors to the Illinois roster.

In addition to his success at the high school level, Holecek also boasts an impressive NFL career. He spent eight seasons with the Bills, Chargers, and Falcons, an accomplishment that would undoubtedly resonate with today’s recruits who aspire to reach the NFL. Holecek’s time in the NFL, alongside his former teammates Kevin Hardy and Simeon Rice, showcases his ability to develop players who achieve long and successful careers in professional football.

Moreover, Holecek’s return to the University of Illinois would create a strong connection with the program’s history. Photos of his teammates, including the top tackler in school history, Dana Howard, adorn the walls of the Smith Center. The presence of these iconic figures would undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on prospective recruits.

While Holecek was approached by former Illinois coach Bill Cubit in 2015, he declined the offer at the time due to his successful position at Loyola. However, with his children done playing and his retirement from high school coaching, the opportunity may now be more enticing.

Recruiting in Illinois is a top priority for current Illinois head coach Bret Bielema, and Holecek’s extensive network and connections with high school coaches would be a valuable asset to the program. However, it remains to be seen if Holecek is willing to make the shift from a controlled existence as the coach of a prep football powerhouse to the demands of a college coaching role.

If pursued and successfully added to the Illinois coaching staff, Holecek would undoubtedly be welcomed with open arms by the notable sports journalist Loren Tate. The familiarity and friendship between the two would add a touch of warmth to Holecek’s potential introductory press conference.

As the search for a new linebacker coach begins, the potential addition of John Holecek has generated excitement among fans, coaches, and recruits. His experience, success, and deep-rooted connections to the program make him an ideal candidate. The decision ultimately rests in his hands, as he contemplates whether the demanding lifestyle of a college football coach is the right fit for him at this stage of his career.
