Former state revenue secretary Dave Hardy was officially sworn in as Kanawha County Circuit Judge on Friday. Hardy, who served as revenue secretary under Governor Jim Justice, was appointed to the position in December 2023. The investiture ceremony took place at the historic Kanawha County courthouse. Hardy’s appointment fills the seat left vacant by the late Judge Joanna Tabit, who passed away in September 2023.
Expressing his gratitude during the ceremony, Hardy said he was thankful for his life and the opportunity to be a member of the judicial branch. He also expressed his gratitude to Governor Jim Justice for appointing him. Hardy is eager to begin his work as a judge and has a particular focus on cases involving the well-being of children. He emphasized his commitment to protecting high-risk children in the county and giving them a voice.
Hardy’s appointment comes after years of service in Governor Justice’s administration. He served as the cabinet secretary of the West Virginia Department of Revenue since January 2017. During his tenure, he worked closely with Governor Justice to overcome financial challenges, including a $500 million deficit and the COVID-19 pandemic. Under their leadership, the state saw record-breaking financial improvements, including the passage of the largest tax cut and a budget surplus of $1.1 billion in 2023.
Prior to his role as revenue secretary, Hardy held various positions in public service and private law practice. He served as a member of Charleston City Council, a Kanawha County Commissioner, and taught graduate classes at West Virginia State University. With over 33 years of experience in private law practice, Hardy brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role as circuit judge.
As Kanawha County’s newest Judicial Circuit Court judge, Hardy is prepared to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.
