Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that Australia’s win against England in the first Ashes Test was due to their unique style of play, adding that there is more than one way to approach the game. Ponting was impressed with Australia’s ability to stand firm during a thrilling victory at Edgbaston, which saw captain Pat Cummins score an unbeaten 44 and secure a match-winning ninth-wicket stand of 55 with Nathan Lyon to chase down 281 on the last day of the match. Australia’s win came following Ben Stokes’ daring first-innings declaration on 393/8 on day one’s play.
While Ponting praised Australia’s tactics, former England captain Kevin Pietersen feels that England’s style of play is still valid and should be continued. Pietersen believes that while fans want to be entertained, ultimately, it is the results that matter in a series like the Ashes. He did, however, acknowledge that while Australia has a unique approach, England should not abandon their brand of cricket.
Despite Ponting and Pietersen’s differing views, both agreed that the Ashes series promises to be an exciting one with plenty of twists and turns. Fans can expect the two sides to continue playing their way and not deviate from their preferred style. With the second Test at Lord’s starting on June 28th, fans can only wait with bated breath to see whether Australia can continue their winning ways or if England will be able to bounce back and level the series.
