The U.S. Embassy in Bogota has issued a security alert for American citizens in Medellin, Colombia, following a series of suspicious deaths. Between November and December 31, 2023, eight U.S. citizens lost their lives under circumstances involving involuntary drugging overdoses or suspected homicides. While the deaths are not believed to be connected, several cases indicate possible drugging, robbery, and overdose, with some linked to the use of online dating apps. As a result, the Embassy has urged caution when using dating apps and vigilance in public places where criminals may target unsuspecting victims.

Disturbing statistics from the Tourism Observatory of the District Personnel of Medellin show a 200% increase in thefts against foreign visitors (excluding Venezuelans) in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year. Violent deaths of foreign visitors also rose by 29%, with a majority being U.S. citizens. The Embassy has highlighted the trend of criminals exploiting dating apps to lure victims into dangerous situations. Individuals agreeing to meet in person are at risk of assault, robbery, drugging, or worse. Reports of such incidents involving online dating apps targeting foreigners have been on the rise.

Major cities like Medellin, Cartagena, and Bogota are hotspots for these crimes, according to the Embassy. To combat this trend, U.S. citizens are advised to remain vigilant, maintain heightened situational awareness, and practice strong personal security when using dating apps or interacting with strangers in unfamiliar environments.

The alert stresses the importance of taking action to protect oneself and avoid becoming a victim of these crimes. By prioritizing personal safety and staying informed about potential risks, individuals can reduce the likelihood of falling prey to criminals targeting unsuspecting individuals.

It is crucial for all individuals, citizens, and foreign visitors alike, to exercise prudence, particularly when engaging in online dating or meeting new people in Colombia. Being aware of surroundings and following recommended safety practices can help ensure personal well-being and mitigate the risks associated with these incidents.

The security alert serves as a reminder that personal safety should never be compromised, and thorough research and caution should precede any online interactions that may lead to face-to-face meetings.
