Global PC shipments experienced a slight decline of 2.7% YoY in Q4 2023, but there are signs of potential growth in the future. The market contraction seems to have bottomed out, providing hope for a recovery in 2024. However, this decline marks the eighth consecutive quarter of year-over-year shipment volume contraction and Q4 2023 had the lowest volume since 2006. These results indicate a slow recovery due to weak demand and reliance on promotions.

The PC market has seen unprecedented declines in recent years, deviating from historical trends. In 2022, shipments dropped by 16.5% compared to the previous year, and preliminary results show a further 13.9% contraction in 2023 compared to 2022. This significant downturn can be attributed to the aftermath of the surge in PC purchases driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ryan Reith from IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers acknowledges the volatility of the PC market in recent years. However, he emphasizes the positive momentum for PCs in the future, with a projected strong year for commercial PC refresh in 2024 and advancements in gaming PCs driving market enthusiasm. Reith also highlights the opportunities for both commercial and consumer vendors, despite the growing focus on AI.

Although the top companies in the industry have mostly remained unchanged, they have also experienced unusual quarterly growth swings, similar to the overall market. Brands with a stronger presence in the commercial segment are expected to approach 2024 with more confidence. Technological advancements are anticipated to create opportunities for vendors targeting both the commercial and consumer markets.

The International Data Corporation’s Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker collects comprehensive market data from over 90 countries, providing historical and forecast trend analysis.

In conclusion, while global PC shipments declined in Q4 2023, there are indications of recovery and future growth. Despite the challenges faced by the PC market in recent years, the anticipated commercial PC refresh in 2024 and advancements in gaming PCs are expected to drive the industry forward. Vendors should prepare for opportunities arising from technological advancements in both the commercial and consumer segments. The future remains uncertain, but the positive momentum suggests the potential for sustained growth in the PC market.
