Supernal Unveils Redesigned S-A2 EVTOL Concept

LAS VEGAS — Supernal has revealed its latest update to the electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) aircraft concept at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The Hyundai Motor Group-supported company showcased the S-A2, a four-passenger air taxi designed for a single pilot. With an aim to commence service in 2028, Supernal plans to fly a prototype of the eVTOL before the end of this year.

The S-A2 features a V-tail and eight tilting rotors placed on a wing using four booms. The front rotors tilt upward while the rear rotors tilt downward, enabling vertical lift. All eight rotors tilt back to a horizontal position for forward flight. The aircraft is designed to cruise at 125 mph at an altitude of 1,500 ft.

Supernal envisions the S-A2 as a means of transporting passengers on short hops within densely populated cities, similar to other eVTOL developers. The battery-powered aircraft is designed to cater to typical city operation needs, covering distances of 25-40 miles.

Based on the S-A1 eVTOL concept unveiled at CES in 2020, the S-A2 showcases improvements in efficiency. The Chief Technology Officer at Supernal, Ben Diachan, explained that the new configuration enhances safety and redundancy through its symmetrical design.

Supernal anticipates that the S-A2 eVTOL will generate 65 dB of noise during takeoff or landing, while cruising horizontally on its wing will produce 45 dB of noise.

Jaiwon Shin, the President of Hyundai Motor Group and CEO of Supernal, emphasized the company’s deliberate approach to the market, focusing on safety and battery performance maturation. Shin stated, Our mantra is, ‘right product at the right time.’ The initial market we believe will be very small for a few years.

As the eVTOL market gains momentum, Supernal anticipates that the demand will shift towards vehicles with higher safety ratings and increased cost-effectiveness. Leveraging Hyundai’s mass manufacturing expertise, Supernal aims to make the S-A2 more cost-effective than its competitors. Designers from the automotive group have also contributed to the S-A2’s aesthetics, including colors, materials, and interior lighting. Hyundai’s battery experts will further assist in the development process.

Supernal plans to submit its application for type certification to the FAA this year, with means of compliance to be submitted in 2025.

In conclusion, Supernal’s unveiling of the S-A2 eVTOL concept marks another significant development in the exciting future of electric air transportation. With its focus on safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, Supernal aims to make a lasting impact in the evolving eVTOL market.
