Man arrested for tearing OFW wife’s passport
A disturbing incident unfolded at NAIA Terminal 1 when a man was arrested for assaulting his wife, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), and tearing up her passport. The victim, identified as Myren Detaro Onato, shared her harrowing experience with reporters. She revealed that her husband, Jonard Banate, has a history of abusive behavior, particularly when under the influence of alcohol and consumed by jealousy.
Onato recounted her shock when Banate appeared at the airport and immediately seized her. He forcefully took her cellphone and shattered it into pieces. To her horror, he then ripped apart her passport and boarding pass, effectively sabotaging her departure to Kuwait via Philippine Airlines (PAL).
It appears that Onato’s flight was scheduled for today, January 10, at 1:00 p.m. Her employer in Kuwait expects her to return to work after the Christmas vacation. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the PNP-AVSEU stepped in to assist the distressed OFW in her attempt to seek Immigration’s guidance at NAIA. Unfortunately, due to the destruction of her passport, Onato cannot utilize it as it is regarded as a vital government document. Destroying such a document carries penalties for the offender.
Presently, efforts are underway to retrieve Onato’s luggage from the airline. She had already completed the check-in process before her husband callously tore up her passport and boarding pass at NAIA Terminal 1.
This incident sheds light on the vulnerability faced by OFWs, particularly when exposed to domestic abuse. It is a stark reminder of the importance of providing support systems and raising awareness about the rights and welfare of these overseas workers, who contribute significantly to the Philippine economy.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities assure the public that the offender will face appropriate legal consequences for his actions. The incident also serves as a call to action for the government and relevant agencies to strengthen initiatives that protect the rights and safety of OFWs.
As Onato’s story circulates, it is critical for society to rally behind her and others in similar situations. The international community also plays a vital role in supporting the rights of OFWs and advocating for policies that ensure their well-being.
This incident serves as a reminder to address the issue of abuse within relationships and implement proactive measures to safeguard the welfare of OFWs.
