CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu School Education Minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, announced on Tuesday that alumni of government schools will be included in the respective school management committees. The minister made this statement during a conference for alumni of government school students as part of the ‘Vizhuthugal’ initiative, which saw the participation of over 3,000 former students.
The initiative aims to enhance community involvement in government schools across the state. The department had encouraged former students to register for the alumni forum, and an impressive 6.42 lakh individuals responded. From this pool, four lakh students, including 2,500 from around 100 countries, have expressed their willingness to support infrastructure development. Additionally, approximately two lakh students have shown their interest in volunteering. Secretary of the school education department, J Kumaragurubaran, revealed that former students have already donated Rs 3 crore towards government schools.
During the conference, Anbil Mahesh read a message from the Chief Minister, who urged former students to mentor present students. The minister also outlined plans to include two to five former students in management committees, as suggested by Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. Anbil Mahesh applauded the various initiatives carried out by the alumni to uplift government schools.
In a separate announcement earlier the same day, Anbil Mahesh introduced the application ‘Nalam Naadi,’ designed for special educators to identify disabilities in students. The application aims to ensure that government assistance reaches students with specific needs.
