Following the debut of its Helix light eVTOL, electric aviation startup Pivotal has started selling the aircraft in the US. The unique feature of the Helix is that it does not require FAA pilot certification, making it accessible to a wider range of potential customers. Pivotal, based in Palo Alto, California, gained recognition in the industry with its BlackFly aircraft. Recently, the company changed its name to Pivotal and introduced the Helix as its fourth-generation platform eVTOL, which incorporates technology from its predecessor with significant improvements.
The Helix is Pivotal’s first scalable production aircraft and offers an opportunity for US customers who have always dreamed of flying. Although it falls under the FAA’s Part 103 (Ultralight) category, the Helix does not require a pilot’s license. However, comprehensive flight training provided by the creators is a requirement for all eVTOL pilots. It is important to note that Helix owners are limited to flying in non-congested areas and must steer clear of airports.
After announcing that US sales would begin in early January, Pivotal has now officially opened its order books for the Helix light eVTOL. Interested customers in the US can now order their own Helix, with prices starting at $190,000 (before taxes, delivery, and additional fees). Pivotal offers three different packages with varying customizations and added features to cater to individual preferences.
The Helix is designed to be easily transportable, as it can fit inside a 16-foot trailer when disassembled. When owners are ready to take flight, the Helix can be assembled and prepared within just 30 minutes. Pivotal CEO Ken Karklin expressed his enthusiasm for this milestone in eVTOL technology:
We’re proud to begin selling, and soon delivering, our Helix aircraft. The market is ready for the wonder of aerial recreation and short-hop eVTOL travel. We are ready to provide the beauty and freedom of personal flight to a whole lot of people with a passion for flying and an interest in creating a new generation of aviators and aviation.
US customers interested in purchasing a Helix can secure a pre-order by paying a non-refundable $250 application fee. Following that, a $50,000 deposit is required to secure a production slot, and from there, prospective buyers can schedule their mandatory flight training. Initial deliveries of the Helix are anticipated to begin on June 10, 2024.
This eVTOL innovation from Pivotal promises to bring the joy of personal flight to a wider audience, offering an accessible and convenient flying experience. With its impressive capabilities and easy assembly process, the Helix is set to make waves in the aviation industry, revolutionizing the way people think about recreational flying and short-distance travel. With the opening of US sales, more individuals will have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of taking to the skies.
