The government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is making a move to purchase or acquire the historic island of Balliceaux, located in the Grenadines. Balliceaux holds significant cultural and memorial value, as it was the final resting place for thousands of Garifuna people who died in the late 17th century. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves announced that the government is currently seeking a valuation for the privately-owned island and hopes to reach an agreement with the owners for its purchase. However, if an agreement cannot be reached, the government will consider invoking the law to acquire the island through fair and reasonable compensation. Gonsalves emphasized the importance of ensuring that the title and ownership of the land are thoroughly examined before any acquisition takes place. The prime minister also highlighted the historical and cultural significance of Balliceaux and emphasized the need for any future development to be sensitive to its memorial dimensions. Furthermore, he reiterated that Battowia, a nearby island, must remain a protected bird sanctuary and free from any development. The government aims to have the purchase or acquisition matters resolved by March 14, the date on which the country commemorates National Heroes’ Day.
