Samsung has unveiled its latest innovation in smartphone display technology at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The company’s panel-making affiliate, Samsung Display, showcased the In&Out Flip, a 360-degree foldable smartphone display that can be folded both inward and outward. This unique form factor features touch screens on both sides, offering consumers a new alternative to traditional bar-shaped smartphones.

The In&Out Flip is designed for users who prefer the sleekness of bar-shaped smartphones but also desire the versatility of foldable devices. Samsung Display spokesperson expressed excitement about the technology, stating, In&Out Flip is a technology that can provide a new alternative for consumers who prefer bar-shaped smartphones due to the thickness of foldable products.

Samsung ensured the durability of the In&Out Flip by subjecting it to extreme conditions. At their CES booth, attendees witnessed the device withstanding temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius while basketballs were bounced on its panels. This testing attests to the device’s robustness under real-world usage scenarios.

In addition to the In&Out Flip, Samsung also showcased its Rollable Flex, which was initially introduced in May 2023. This device features a flexible screen that can be unrolled, similar to a scroll, expanding to more than five times its original size.

Furthermore, Samsung highlighted its micro display technology tailored to extended reality headsets, including mixed reality and augmented reality devices from major companies like Apple, Samsung, and Meta. The company’s high-resolution RGB organic light-emitting diode (OLED) on Silicon (OLEDoS) delivers enhanced pixel density and luminescence by employing organic light-emitting diodes on silicon substrates instead of glass-based ones.

Samsung’s focus on larger displays was evident with the introduction of a new 31.5-inch ultra-high-definition (UHD) OLED monitor and the world’s first 360 Hz OLED monitor. These cutting-edge displays offer unparalleled visual experiences for professionals and gamers alike.

The automotive display segment was not overlooked either, as Samsung unveiled the Flex Note Extendable, designed specifically for vehicle interiors. This display can retract to 11 inches and extend up to a maximum of 17.3 inches, providing users with a 4:3 aspect ratio for various applications.

LG Display, a competitor in the field, is also developing OLED technologies for gaming and automotive displays. Their CES 2024 lineup includes an array of gaming OLEDs ranging from 20 to 40 inches, with a 27-inch quad HD (QHD) gaming OLED panel boasting the world’s first 480 Hz refresh rate for an OLED display. LG Display also presented a range of OLED panels for cars, featuring gauges and infotainment features, such as Plastic-OLED (P-OLED), Advanced Thin OLED (ATO), and Low-Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) LCD.

Both Samsung and LG Display emphasized sound quality improvements. Samsung showcased their speaker utilizing Thin Actuator Sound Solution technology, which is significantly lighter and thinner than conventional car speakers. This innovation allows for flexible installation in various areas within a vehicle, without compromising the audio experience.

These advancements in display technology showcased by Samsung and LG Display at CES 2024 demonstrate their ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation. With foldable displays, flexible screens, enhanced pixel density, and improved sound quality, consumers can look forward to an exciting future of immersive visual experiences across various devices and applications.
