In an incident of moral policing in Belagavi, a group of miscreants allegedly assaulted a boy and his cousin sister, who were sitting on a bench on the Fort Lake premises on Saturday. The police have arrested nine people in this connection. A search is on for the other accused.
The injured victims have been identified as Sachin Lamani, a resident of Goundwad village, and Muskan from BK Kangrali village in Belagavi taluk. The accused have been identified as Mohammed Hussain Noor Ahmed Inamadar, Saif Ali Naseem Ali Mullani Ismail Magadum, Atif Amhed Abdul Majeed Shaikh, Mohammed Aman Gulamhussain Chabuksawar, Umar Sadiq Badiger, Azan Abiden Kalkundri, Rihan Mohammad Gous Rotiwale, and two minor boys.
According to sources, the accused dragged the victims to an abandoned shed on the Fort Lake premises and locked them there. They later assaulted them for almost three hours. The victims’ mothers are sisters, and the father of the girl passed away 11 years ago.
The victims had gone to Belagavi to file an online application for benefits under the Yuva Nidhi scheme at a cyber center. When the computer operator informed them about a server problem and the need to restart, they decided to spend their time at the Fort Lake premises.
Upon seeing them sitting together, the accused confronted them and asked why Muskan was sitting with a boy from another community. Despite the victims explaining that they were cousins, the accused did not believe them and forcefully took them to the nearby shed.
The victims pleaded with the accused to let them go, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. The accused proceeded to assault them with rods and sticks. In a desperate attempt to seek help, the boy managed to make a phone call to his parents. Without wasting any time, his parents and some relatives rushed to the Fort Lake premises to save them.
Upon hearing their screams, the boy’s parents and relatives quickly located the shed and rescued the victims. They were then taken to BIMS for medical treatment. DCP (Law and Order) Rohan Jagadish assured that the police are taking this case seriously. Nine people have already been arrested, and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
