Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Successfully Removes Rare Tumor from Woman

Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital successfully identified and removed an ectopic insulinoma, a rare tumor that secretes large amounts of insulin leading to low blood sugar levels, in a non-diabetic woman from Dubai. The middle-aged woman experienced recurrent episodes of fainting, tremors, and palpitations, which couldn’t be evaluated successfully in Dubai. Upon further assessment at SGRH, the medical team used an advanced endoscopic procedure called endoscopic ultrasound to identify a small tumor near the duodenum. The tumor was confirmed to be an insulinoma through microscopic testing and was removed surgically using a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach. This resulted in the complete resolution of the woman’s symptoms. Insulinomas are typically found in or near the pancreas but can be ectopic or located elsewhere in the body, making the endoscopic ultrasound an essential tool for detection. These tumors can be easily missed through conventional imaging techniques. The medical team at SGRH’s Institute of Liver, Gastroenterology, and Pancreatic Biliary Sciences recommends endoscopic ultrasound as a crucial technique for detection.
