Met Office issues warning as it’s confirmed ‘heavy’ snow is on the way

The Met Office has issued a warning that heavy snow showers are expected to hit parts of the UK in the coming days. A yellow weather warning will be in place from 4am on Monday until Friday, with icy conditions and snow likely to affect transport and roads in areas including Greater London, Kent, Surrey, East Sussex, and West Sussex. Trains are also expected to be affected in these locations. The warning extends to regions in the North East, Yorkshire and Humber, and East and South East of England. The North West and South West of England, as well as the East and West Midlands, are facing a more severe situation, with residents being issued an amber cold-health alert.

The Met Office predicts that the heaviest snowfall will occur over the North Downs of Sussex. Public transport users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, while walkers and cyclists are urged to stick to main roads. Sky weather presenter Jo Wheeler warns that overnight frosts, fog, and icy stretches on roads and pavements are likely in these conditions. She also highlights the risk of showers falling on frozen surfaces and instantly turning into ice. The UK Health Security Agency is specifically urging caution among Britons over 65 who have pre-existing medical conditions.

The Met Office’s warning comes as the UK experiences a cold pool of air moving into southern areas, bringing the potential for sleet or snow showers. With night-time temperatures close to freezing, there is a high chance of these showers falling on frozen surfaces and causing hazardous conditions. The amber cold-health warning indicates that the cold weather is likely to impact the entire health service for an extended period, putting the entire population at risk.

Precautionary measures should be taken by individuals and authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone during this snowy weather. Being aware of the warning and following official advice can help minimize any disruptions caused by these wintry conditions.
