The legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Free Bird’

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd recently descended upon Music City to usher in the new year, and during their visit, they reflected on the enduring legacy of their iconic song, ‘Free Bird.’

Lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Rickey Medlocke sat down with News 2’s Nikki McGee ahead of Nashville’s Big Bash to discuss the profound impact that ‘Free Bird’ has had on their fans.

It was actually dedicated to Dwayne Allman, of the Allman Brothers, and it’s one of the few love songs Lynyrd Skynyrd had, revealed Van Zant. He further explained, Look at it now, we have people that go, ‘Hey, it was our graduation song.’ ‘We played it at our father or mother’s funeral.’ It’s just a relatable song, and we never end a show without it.

For Medlocke, the significance of ‘Free Bird’ lies in its majestic conclusion. He shared, Well, for me, playing the very ending of the song, the lead solo, you know, it’s become so important to me in my life. And I’ve played it so many years that I couldn’t imagine not playing it in the show. He continued, Plus, we’ve developed it over the years. Right now, over the last three, four years, there’s a special moment in it in the very end that I’ve seen grown men with tears in their eyes. So, it’s one of those iconic tunes.

This revered anthem initially made its appearance on the band’s debut album, ‘Pronounced ‘Leh-‘nerd ‘Skin-‘nerd,’ released in 1973. It later became an official single in November 1974, cementing its place in music history.

‘Free Bird’ has transcended generations, captivating fans with its emotional resonance and powerful guitar solos. The song’s relatability and timeless appeal have proven it to be deeply etched within the hearts of listeners.

Notably, it has served as a soundtrack for key life events, such as graduation ceremonies and funerals, evoking both nostalgia and solace in equal measure. Its enduring popularity continues to thrive, with Lynyrd Skynyrd making a point to include it in every performance, ensuring that it remains a vital part of their live shows.

As the band has honed their craft over the years, they have added depth and meaning to the song. Medlocke proudly shared a poignant detail, stating, There’s a special moment in it in the very end that I’ve seen grown men with tears in their eyes.

‘Free Bird’ has become an iconic tune that resonates across various cultures and continents, capturing the hearts of music enthusiasts worldwide. Its emotive power and raw energy have stood the test of time, and it continues to be a cherished part of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legacy.

In the ever-evolving landscape of music, ‘Free Bird’ stands tall as a testament to the band’s impact and influence. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s commitment to performing this beloved classic reaffirms its enduring relevance, ensuring that fans old and new can experience the magic of ‘Free Bird’ for years to come.
