The Chittoor district police in Andhra Pradesh have transferred six policemen and registered a case following allegations of torture and sexual harassment brought against them by five women from Tamil Nadu who were part of a group of eight people accused of property offences. The police arrested eight accused, but on humanitarian grounds released six, including five women who had only one case against them, invoking 41 A CrPc (appearance before a police officer). The six people who were released did not make any allegations of torture or sexual harassment against the police at the time and their statements were videographed. On June 17 the women were admitted to a hospital in Krishnagiri district and claimed they were tortured and sexually abused. A case has been registered under IPC Section 376 (punishment for sexual assault) to investigate the allegations, which will be supervised by an additional SP (ASP) rank officer. Police have also invoked the SC/ST Atrocities Act, the eight accused being of the Kuruba tribe.
