Dublin has officially begun its year as the European Capital of Smart Tourism with the launch of its Smart Tourism Programme. The designation, awarded by the European Commission, recognizes cities that lead the way in sustainability, accessibility, culture, and digital innovation. Dublin City Council, alongside Smart Dublin and Dublin City Council Culture Company, supports the city’s established Smart Tourism Programme, making it one of the few cities in Europe with such a program.
Throughout the year, Dublin will host a series of events, engagements, and activities aimed at promoting best practices in sustainable tourism. Representatives from other leading European destinations will also visit the city for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Catherine Martin, the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, commended Dublin’s designation, highlighting the city’s commitment to being a world-class sustainable and culturally-rich destination. Martin expressed her hope that Dublin’s achievement would inspire other regions to strive for excellence in sustainable tourism practices.
Richard Shakespeare, Chief Executive of Dublin City Council, expressed his delight at Dublin being awarded the European Capital of Smart Tourism title. He emphasized Dublin’s commitment to delivering a greener, more accessible, inclusive, and innovative city for both visitors and locals. Dublin’s Smart Tourism programme, established in 2019, has enabled the city to learn from other leading European cities and incorporate best practices into their own work through their Tourism Strategy 2023-2023.
Dublin’s designation as the European Capital of Smart Tourism in 2024 serves as a platform for the city to showcase its innovative approach to tourism. As Dublin continues to prioritize sustainability, accessibility, and cultural enrichment, it aims to enhance the overall visitor experience while creating positive environmental, social, and economic outcomes for all.
With its new title, Dublin solidifies its position as a leading European destination focused on embracing and implementing smart tourism practices. Throughout the year, Dublin residents and visitors alike can look forward to experiencing and contributing to a forward-thinking and sustainable tourism landscape in the city.
