CBS has officially given the green light to a new medical drama series titled Watson, inspired by the world of Sherlock Holmes. The show will star Morris Chestnut, best known for his role in Boyz n the Hood, as the iconic Dr. John Watson. This marks a significant milestone in Chestnut’s career as he steps into the shoes of the classic companion character. Let’s dive into the show’s storyline, cast, and more.

According to Variety, Watson will pick up the story one year after the death of Sherlock Holmes at the hands of his nemesis, Moriarty. The medical drama will revolve around Dr. John Watson (played by Chestnut) as he resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic specializing in treating rare disorders. However, Watson’s past catches up with him as he becomes entangled in a new chapter of his longstanding battle with Moriarty.

With a focus on the faceoff between Moriarty and Watson, Watson will not only explore the thrilling rivalry but also delve into the protagonist’s career as a doctor dealing with challenging cases of rare disorders. The show promises to combine elements of edge-of-your-seat medical mysteries with rich character storytelling.

Morris Chestnut, born on January 1, 1969, is a renowned Hollywood actor with an impressive filmography. He has delivered memorable performances in movies like Boyz n the Hood (1991), The Best Man (1999), and its sequels, as well as acclaimed TV shows like The Enemy Within (2019) and Rosewood (2015-2017). In addition to his role as the lead character, Chestnut will also serve as an executive producer on Watson, showcasing his versatile talents.

Behind the scenes, Craig Sweeny takes charge as the show creator and showrunner, having garnered experience with popular series like The 4400 and Limitless. Alongside Chestnut, Sweeny will also contribute as an executive producer, ensuring his creative vision aligns with the direction of the series. Joining them as executive producers are Aaron Kaplan, Shäron Moalem MD, PhD, and Brian Morewitz for Kapital Entertainment. Larry Teng will direct the pilot episode and also serve as an executive producer, while CBS Studios will provide the production resources for the show.

She stated, We are thrilled to feature such a beloved character from the world of Sherlock Holmes at the center of this series and have it brought to life by Morris Chestnut in a fresh and unexpected take on the immortal doctor.

CBS has previously explored the world of Sherlock Holmes with the successful series Elementary, which aired for seven seasons from 2012 to 2019. Created by Robert Doherty, Elementary also capitalized on the intrigue surrounding Holmes and his companions, resonating with audiences.

Fans eagerly anticipating Watson won’t have to wait long, as the show is slated for release during the 2024-2025 broadcast season. With its thrilling premise, talented cast, and seasoned creative team, Watson promises to captivate viewers with its unique blend of medical drama and Sherlock Holmes lore.
