A Vallejo man, Alexandru Bambaloi, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail and probation after being found guilty of 43 counts related to a card skimming operation at a Walmart in Chico, Butte County. The District Attorney, Mike Ramsey, revealed that Bambaloi, a Romanian national, was responsible for stealing the ATM card numbers of nearly 4,400 shoppers. Bambaloi’s accomplice, Robert Miclescu, also a Romanian national, pleaded guilty and received a sentence of five years in jail and 11 years of probation. The police discovered the skimming device at Walmart, which was designed to resemble a legitimate payment terminal and covertly record card information and PINs. The investigation uncovered evidence linking Bambaloi to the crime, including a significant amount of cash and cloned gift cards with stolen ATM numbers. Authorities suspect these skimming activities are part of an organized, large-scale operation connected to international organized crime. Despite the challenges in detecting and prosecuting such crimes, the Butte County law enforcement agencies have successfully pursued and convicted multiple ATM fraudsters in the past year.
