The California State Assembly was thrown into chaos on Wednesday as anti-Israel radicals staged an insurrection, shutting down the first day of the state legislative session and forcing lawmakers to flee. Shockingly, no arrests were made as the insurrectionists were allowed to linger in the chamber.
The disruption was orchestrated by three so-called Jewish groups, but their claim to Jewish identity remains unverified. At best, they represent a radical fringe of the American Jewish community, with two of the three groups having a history of supporting terrorism.
Protesters from these Jewish anti-war organizations flooded the Rotunda and the Assembly gallery, causing lawmakers to adjourn early due to the disturbance. Demonstrators chanted, sang, and unveiled banners, making their demands for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war heard.
The Legislative Jewish Caucus expressed their concern, stating that the protest shut down the democratic process. Assembly members had mixed reactions to the disruption, with some leaving the room immediately and appearing visibly upset. As lawmakers began exiting the chamber, protesters continued to sing the words cease-fire now.
Surprisingly, the California Highway Patrol sergeants, responsible for Capitol security, did not intervene or arrest any of the demonstrators. Instead, the insurrectionists were allowed to remain in the chamber, singing and chanting to a mostly empty room. Even after the adjournment, with the lights off, they continued to sing while illuminating the space with their cell phone flashlights.
It is worth noting that these protesters will not face charges for obstructing an official proceeding, unlike those involved in the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Politico highlighted a growing divide between progressive activists and more mainstream Democrats over the Israel-Hamas conflict, as this incident marks the third time in recent months that cease-fire demonstrators have disrupted a major political event in California.
