In a latest study, researchers have found a link between schizophrenia, a psychotic disorder, and severe Covid-19 infection.
According to the findings, people who had Covid-19 infection are over four times more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia compared to those who weren’t infected.
Published in the National Library of Medicine, researchers from West Virginia University, US, a potential interaction between the common schizophrenia drug, clozapine, and vaccines.
Schizophrenia, a mental disorder with symptoms like hallucinations and cognitive difficulties, has unclear origins, but past studies suggested viral infections could play a role. The recent discovery strengthens this idea, calling for further investigation.
The study also highlighted a need for careful examination of vaccination strategies for those on clozapine therapy.
Our data indicated that younger individuals face a heightened risk of SSPD (Schizophrenia Spectrum and Psychotic Disorders) after contracting Covid-19. These results, aligned with the known neurotropism of SARS-CoV-2 and earlier studies, accentuate the need for vigilant psychiatric assessment and support in the era of Long-Covid, especially among younger populations, the authors wrote.
The link between severe Covid-19 infections and an increased risk of schizophrenia emphasised the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to address the pandemic’s long-term mental health effects.
Furthermore, the research discussed the pandemic’s impact on access to Brief Interventions (BIs) for smoking and alcohol in primary care.
