The Supreme Court has refused to urgently hear the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) plea against the Delhi High Court’s order of granting six-week interim bail to businessman Sameer Mahendru. The ED has challenged the bail on medical grounds in a money laundering case related to the now-scrapped Delhi liquor excise policy. A vacation bench of justices Surya Kant and MM Sundresh mentioned that the High Court has the discretion to make such decisions, adding that people are languishing in jails. In December 2020, the trial court took cognizance of a Prosecution Complaint filed by the ED in a money laundering case revolving around an excise policy case. The FIR in the case was recommended by the Delhi Lieutenant Governor following a reference from the Union Home Ministry.
