The London Zoo recently conducted its annual census, which is both a regulatory requirement and an opportunity for zookeepers to gather data on the animal population and contribute to conservation efforts. Over a span of two days, approximately 14,000 animals were counted, ranging from alpacas to zebras.
Among the participants in the headcount were 74 Humboldt penguins, who obediently lined up to be counted. However, not all animals were as cooperative. For example, Crispin, an endangered Sumatran tiger cub, found amusement in gnawing on a chalkboard.
The census serves a vital purpose in managing breeding programs for endangered species. The data collected will be shared with zoos worldwide, allowing them to make informed decisions and improve these programs. Zoological operations manager Dan Simmonds praised the innovative techniques used by the keepers to accurately count the diverse array of animals.
Additionally, the census provided an opportunity to showcase notable arrivals over the past year. The London Zoo flaunted a little two-toed sloth and 17 newly hatched chicks, including six Socorro doves, which are currently extinct in the wild. These additions reflect the zoo’s commitment to conservation efforts and contribute to the growth of endangered species populations.
