Millions of Parents Can Now Claim Child Benefit Online, Making it Faster and Easier, UK

Millions more parents are now able to claim Child Benefit online for the first time since it was launched 47 years ago. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is encouraging parents to go digital rather than use the old paper system. Previously, families had to fill out a paper form, post it, and wait up to 16 weeks for their first payment. Now, the application process can be completed online in just ten minutes, with payments being made in as little as three days.

Last year, HMRC started accepting fully digital claims for Child Benefit for families with children under six months old. However, now the online system is being extended for use by all eligible parents. Suzanne Newton, HMRC’s Interim Director General for Transformation, stated, We know how much parents and guardians rely on Child Benefit to help with essential costs. We’ve made it far easier and quicker for families to claim this crucial help by making it digital.

Claiming Child Benefit online not only saves time but also ensures quicker payments. Nigel Huddleston, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, said, Family time is precious, especially when you have a newborn baby, so it’s great news that HMRC is enabling parents to save time on claiming their child benefit online so they can focus on what truly matters.

Child Benefit is worth £24 a week, or £1,248 a year, for the oldest or only child. The rate for each additional child is £15.90 a week, or almost £827 a year. It’s important for families to note that claims can be backdated for up to 12 weeks, so it is encouraged to apply as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

To be eligible for Child Benefit, parents or guardians must be responsible for bringing up a child who is under 16, or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training. There is no limit on the number of children for which parents can claim. The application can be made from the day after a child’s birth has been registered. Parents will need the child’s birth certificate, their bank details, National Insurance number, and their partner’s National Insurance number (if applicable).

Additionally, claiming Child Benefit also has the added benefit of receiving National Insurance credits, which count towards the parent’s State Pension. However, it’s crucial to note that parents with an individual income over £50,000 and whose partner receives Child Benefit may have to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge.

Families with adopted children or children whose birth was registered outside the UK can also claim for Child Benefit online. However, they will need to send additional supporting information through the post.

This major change in the Child Benefit system brings convenience and efficiency to millions of parents across the country. By embracing the digital application process, families can save time and receive the financial support they need for their children quickly. HMRC’s initiative to transition from paper-based forms to an online system ensures that parents can focus more on their family and less on administrative tasks. So, if you are eligible for Child Benefit, make the switch to the online system and enjoy a seamless and timely application process.
