BEIJING – China has called on relevant countries to respect the fact that Hong Kong has returned to Chinese sovereignty and to abandon their colonial mentality. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, made this statement in response to a recent Hong Kong-related statement issued by countries including the United Kingdom and the United States under the name of the Media Freedom Coalition.
Wang highlighted the cases of Julian Assange and Edward Snowden as evidence that the concept of freedom of the press is often exploited by certain countries to attack and smear others. He categorized the statement as a smear against press freedom in Hong Kong, an attack on the legitimate law enforcement of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, and a move to embolden individuals such as Jimmy Lai Chee-ying who are anti-China and seek to destabilize Hong Kong.
According to Wang, these countries making the statement care little about press freedom when their own interests are involved. He argued that their remarks about Hong Kong’s situation stem from their unhappiness with Hong Kong’s prosperity and their desire to maintain their past privileges and influence, which are no longer viable.
Wang emphasized that Hong Kong adheres to the rule of law, and all laws must be observed with those who break them being held accountable. He pointed out that since the enactment of the national security law in Hong Kong, the city has experienced order restoration and is on the path to prosperity. The rule of law has been upheld, and the lawful rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents, including press freedom and freedom of speech, have been protected in a safe and stable environment.
Moreover, Wang highlighted that the number of international media outlets and journalists in Hong Kong has increased since the introduction of the national security law, underscoring a fact that cannot be denied by unbiased observers.
Wang further noted that over 100 countries have expressed their support for China on issues regarding Hong Kong in multilateral forums, such as the United Nations General Assembly’s third committee and the Human Rights Council. This widespread support demonstrates that the truth is not hidden from the world.
In conclusion, Wang firmly stated that any attempt to interfere in Hong Kong affairs under the pretext of press freedom is destined to fail.
The issue of Hong Kong’s status and the principles surrounding press freedom continue to be a topic of debate and contention. As the international community grapples with differing perspectives, it remains to be seen how this issue will be resolved and what actions will be taken by relevant countries in response.
